Welcome to the Round House. This all-ability, accessible family dwelling is near the home of the 140-year-old Durango-Silverton Narrow Guage Railroad, which is nestled in the heart of the rugged & beautiful San Juan Mountains. This home was designed to capture the nostalgic era of locomotives and the Animas River Valley for an inclusive family experience.

Engineer Village is a secluded neighborhood contained within The Purgatory Resort and located 27 miles north of Downtown Durango. The Purgatory Resort offers a spectacular mountain ambience with the convenience of resort services such as on-demand shuttle, fitness center, heated pool & spa deck, club lounge, family game rooms & day spa. During the winter season, the ski lifts and mountain village are a quick 5-minute shuttle ride away, and for those more dangerous souls, Silverton Mountain, offering over 1800 acres of the steepest and t deepest un-groomed powder is a mere 22 miles away. During the summer months, Purgatory has landed squarely on the map as a hemisphere go-to destination with over 400 miles of single-track and a world class bike park. Nearby, the San Juan National Forest is home to the Colorado trail, a 500-mile-long trail system that offers some of the most scenic mountain biking in the state. For those who seek water adventures, the Animas River & its world-class rafting & fly-fishing opportunities await.
Access to the home is via paved and plowed roads. Whether in the home, on the deck, or enjoying the hot tub on the porch, there are zero-threshold entrances /exists in each of these locations. The home is designed for mobility- ease throughout which includes an open-cage elevator and wide hallways and walkways. Upon request, high-chair & pack-n-play crib available.
Upon entering the home, you will be greeted with a flare of old European charm from the custom-designed elevator, which takes you to the second floor, and an Americana retro ski-chalet on the entry level.
Be entertained on the entry level within the media area, where a Smart-TV and high-speed internet is available. If you are one that delights in old fashion games, various board games and puzzles are at your disposal. Indulge yourself with a nearby kitchenette that includes a refrigerator, Nespresso machine and a microwave when you want to snack.
The ground level includes 2 types of bedrooms. One is a queen-sized bedroom offering a cozy, Colorado Aspen inspired environment filtered with natural light. Next to the queen bedroom is a spa- like bathroom with a heated towel rack and flooring, The other bedroom is a parlor train-inspired custom bunk room that sleeps up to 6 people. The two bottom bunks are queen-size, and the two upper bunks are twin-XL’s. The bunk room has an attached bunk bath which consists of radiant floor heating, a custom triple-sink vanity, two separate showers with enclosed privacy changing booths, and 6 individual retro lockers.
The second-floor level offers spectacular panoramic views of Engineer Mountain and the Hermosa Cliffs. Once you ascend to the second floor, enjoy one of two indulgent primary suites set off to the north side of the house. The primary one suite has an old French motif with an in-room fireplace, king bed, and a blissful ensuite bathroom. Outrageous views to the south and a private deck will encourage an early morning coffee on the porch-swing or a late-night cocktail, with an overhead Infratech heater for comfort.
The Primary two suite, with a bit more contemporary feel with whimsical greens and gold. This queen side bedroom also has an in-room fireplace, magnificent southern views, and a beautifully custom ADA bathroom which includes a wide, free-standing blue-stone sink, a zero-threshold shower with 90-degree pivoting door, 2 easily accessible shower head options, & a retractable shower seat.
After taking a ride up on the custom elevator to the second floor, you’ll find stunning views of the Purgatory Ski Resort and the Animas Valley in the living room. The ambiance in this area is embraced by art that tells a story about the surrounding area, relaxed seating, and a custom wet bar providing a full cocktail set- up along with an espresso machine. You’ll also notice the warmth of the towering dual-sided fireplace inspired by the locomotive engines.
On the other side of the dual-sided fireplace, an artisan’s kitchen waits for the chef of the house. Gourmet meals can be prepared from a 6-burner dual stove and griddle, warming drawer, built in microwave, and a RO water supply. Not only does it have state-of-the-art appliances, but it is fully stocked in style with all the essentials.
The gourmet kitchen also provides a custom tufted banquette with a round table for quaint gatherings at breakfast or for catching up on some work. If a more formal experience is desired, a comfortable 8 ft, white oak table, that expands to 12 ft, will fill your dining experience with elegance.
For a hassle-free grilling experience, there is a pass-through window from the kitchen to the grill while seating is provided on both sides for the bystanders. For the chef on grill duty, an in-line propane, top-of-the-line DCS grill, complete with smoking box & rotisserie is available.
Want an experience outdoors? Don’t fret since there is a massive L-shaped wrap around deck with enough room to have all your guests sit outside in comfort. For those cooler months, overhead infra-tech heaters can be turned on, bring a blanket out and make great conversation. If you’re in the mood for a little heat therapy, on the back patio is a 6-person Nordic hot tub, with accompanying club-chairs & a fire table!
Getting into Durango, the Durango-La Plata County Airport (DRO) is the primary regional airport, offering yearly non-stop service to Dallas-Ft Worth, Denver, and Phoenix (DFW/DEN/PHX) & seasonal non-stop to Houston (IAH).
Rental cars or your own transportation will make life easier, Uber & Lyft exist, but the density of drivers is low!
Our home is 27 miles from downtown Durango, a beautiful ride north up the Animas Valley, where you will have a chance to stop for groceries, drinks, last minute items & even a great burger (James Ranch!) or gift (Honeyville!).
Pulling into Engineer Village, directly across from Purgatory resort, you will notice your own private tennis/pickleball court and small outdoor playstation. Its a couple quick turns into the neighborhood, and you will arrive at The Round House.
Once you have arrived, you can either continue to use your vehicle and the ample parking at Purgatory resort or partake in the free door to resort shuttle service that operates from 0700-2100, with a typical 10-minute arrival time once you call them!
The town of Durango has more restaurants per capita than even San Francisco! We encourage you to try many of them, including some of our favorites, El Moro, Pop Sushi, Switchback. Up towards the resort area, do not hesitate to go to two wonderful establishments. The infamous Schoolhouse, where the 1 1/2 hour wait for pizza is worth it just for the conversation and surroundings inside the bar. Newer to the scene, is The Nugget Mountain Bar, a very short 3/4 mile from The Round House, you will find good things do come in small packages. Not to be outdone, Purgatory Resort’s culinary expertise has really expanded the past couple of years, and their nightly dinner specials are outrageous. We recommend using the Durango Club ad least one night during your stay, and enjoy fantastic service, great bartending, and delicious food.
